Abstract

Maintaining satisfactory operating of power system requires optimal tuning of controller such as automatic voltage regulator (AVR) and power system stabilizer (PSS) parameters. Tuning method is applied to obtain optimal control parameters AVR and PSS for improving the voltage regulation and damping of the system, respectively. The simultaneous tuning for AVR-PSS is an important role to obtain the best solution for improving systems. Proportional, integral, and differential (PID) controller tuning based on PSS is presented in this paper. Problems for getting the optimal controller parameters are organized as an optimization problems solved by combining few optimization techniques, i.e., bacteria foraging, particle swarm, and differential evolution for obtaining the best optimization solution. The PID parameters are selected and optimized by bacteria foraging, particle swarm with time varying acceleration coefficient, differential evolution (BFO-PSOTVAC-DE) techniques. The BFO-PSOTVAC-DE method was applied to PID-PSS tuning and also AVR gain is compared to another method. The BFO-PSOTVAC-DE method has the ability to dampen the optimal and minimal errors suppressed as shown in the simulation results.
