Evolutionary programming, genetic algorithms, emer gence, evolution
Evolutionary Programming, an area of research in which software development exploits analogies with bi ological evolution, is already popular and is gaining re spectability. An examination of the basic ideas under lying this research reveals incorrect assumptions and restricted approaches that limit the potential value of the results. We identify four issues that we believe to be important in the foundations of evolutionary pro gramming and we describe a project designed to in vestigate their implications. We conclude with a dis cussion of possible applications of the research.
