Authoring tools, web-based education, usability
The paucity of instructional designers often necessitates lecturers to take responsibility for the development of e learning materials. This requires an instructional authoring tool, simplistic in its approach but without a corresponding loss of instructional quality. In general these tools are aimed at the professional instructional designer, not catering for lecturers without technical skills. In this paper we propose an architecture for authoring software and describe its implementation through a prototype that we developed. As novices users become more experienced inherent capabilities of the tool are gradually revealed to them depending on their own skills.
