The Packet Reservation Multiple Access protocol has been suggested as a possible candidate for communication in a microcellular environment, such as Personal Communica tion Networks (PCNs), for both packetized voice and data. In this paper, an adaptive transmission scheme is proposed for the Packet Reservation Multiple Access protocol that is able to reduce both the packet dropping probability and the delay for voice traffic. This reduction in packet dropping probability can also be translated into an increased capacity of a PRMA network in terms of the number of supported active terminals. The fundamental principle of the adap tive transmission scheme is that each terminal individually maintains an estimate of the number of contending termi nals, and choose an optimal transmission probability based on this estimate. A simulation model of a PRMA network verifies the properties of the adaptive transmission scheme.
