This paper presents a comparison of energy storage technologies installed in an HV/MV substation. For each technology, optimal economic operation and ca pacities of the storage device are determined. This approach realizes a practical method for load manage ment in power distribution systems and leads to the maximization of net present value of an energy stor age project. Genetic algorithms optimization method is applied to solve this multiple application problem in order to present an economic assessment of energy storage systems associated to distribution substations.
