insulator, partial discharges.
This paper investigates the phenomena which take place on contaminated 20 kV porcelain insulators, stressed by high AC voltages. Measurements of the applied voltage and the corresponding current are presented and an investigation of the observed phenomena is attempted. The results presented convincingly show the existence of partial discharges on the surface of the contaminated insulators beyond a threshold field intensity leading to radiation emission. The estimated corresponding energy leads to the range of the emitted radiation which seems to include acoustic waves, radio waves, microwaves and infrared waves.
