Existing IP multicast routing protocols [2-7] have poor scalability. First, current routing protocols require each router to maintain a multicast forwarding table entry for every group whose distribution tree passes through the router. Therefore, the size of the multicast forwarding table needs to grow with the number of active groups, which results in higher router cost and lower forwarding performance. Second, all these protocols use class D IP address. To keep the class D IP address unique globally is hard. Third, in most of these protocols, many-to-many services have to be implemented based on one-to-many services, which brings new problems. We propose a new model for many-to-many group communication. The key idea of our model is to implement group communication based on unicast protocol. Class D IP addresses is not used. Instead, both group identification and data forwarding are based on unicast IP addresses. To find best path from any sender to any listener, ESP is used. Our model has many advantages such as best path, easy authentication and Comcast implementation.
