Publish/subscribe, portal, and dynamic content
This article presents a method for updating web page content, such as portal content, using a publish/subscribe mechanism that identifies content updates. An efficient mechanism for real-time communication with browser based clients is used to deliver update notifications to the web page, allowing the page to update itself with the new or modified content. Thus, a web page is only updated if its underlying content has changed. The server does not need to perform complex user-customized queries in response to client polling and the user does not need to manually reload the web page. The paper focuses on the application of the publish/subscribe-based update method in a portal environment, where the method allows specific portlets in a portal page to be automatically updated independently of other portlets in the page.
