A hybrid model of flue gas oxygen-content in a bubbling fluidized bed boiler was created for control design purpo ses, specially to reduce NOx emissions. The model was based on industrial test series. The Hammerstein-type model consisted of a nonlinear static part and a linear dynamic part. Steady-state mass and energy balances were used to calculate the effects of various operational vari ables (fuel properties, air flow) on flue gas oxygen content. ARX and Output Error models were compared; the Output Error model was observed to be more reliable than the ARX model. The hybrid model was inexpensive to compute and sufficient to simulate different situations in control design.
