A New Friction Model Based on a Hypothetical Friction Mechanism

Abstract

This paper introduces a new friction model that can rather accurately exhibit the very subtle phenomena of the friction behavior in an ordinary mechanical system. Instead of matching special experimental results using specially designed equations, this model consists of mechanical elements that have the behavior of standard plastic materials. Or, more precisely, this paper suggests a friction mechanism based on Bowden and Tabors’ observation and earlier works about pre-sliding motion in this lab. Initial numerical simulations show that this model does carry all the pre-sliding behaviors and stick slip transition behaviors people found in many experiments. More experiments are being conducted to check the validity of this model.
