Intelligent network design, scientific network design, art network design
This paper endeavours to highlight an intelligent way of designing a LAN. Advances in LAN technology have brought a new methodology with regard to designing networks. This includes the science and the art side of network design [1,2]. The network design that is mathematically based forms the scientific foundation of the design. The mathematics provide the tools for solving problems such as where to locate data concentration equipment and how to route multidrop line to minimize the cost associated with a circuit configured to connect multiple network locations onto a common transmission facility [1,2]. The knowledge of different communications equipments, their capabilities and how such capabilities can be used to develop a variety of network configurations forms the art associated with network design, which is the focus of this paper. The problem that network designers encounter is that after identifying type of equipment (say router) to be used at a certain point in the network they have to pick a specific type of the equipment from a multitude of vendors. It must be noted that some equipment would make the whole logical topology dependent on them, which must be avoided at all cost in a network. This paper suggests how an intelligent network design can be conducted (science and art design).
