Wetting, pollution, dry-band, insulator
This paper presents a theoretical study aimed at providing relevant information on the impact of wetting on the performance of polluted high-voltage insulators. A dynamic arc model is proposed. With the help of the model, a computer program solves the three nonlinear equations simultaneously, to find out leakage current, temperature rise, and finally the dry-band elongation, respectively. Wetting of the surface of the insulator by fog, mist, dew, drizzling, or snowfall plays a very important role in the development and quenching of the scintillations responsible for dry-band formation and expansion. Computational results are logically described.
