Abstract

This paper presents a microscopic traffic simulation model that has been developed to assist in the design of Intelligent Transportation System applications relying on wireless transmissions to obtain data critical to their operation. This model, which is derived from the Intelligent Driver Model open-source traffic simulation model, implements routines allowing vehicles to retrieve information from any vehicles within a given range. The simulation of communication delays is achieved through the use of a unique three-dimensional data structure allowing the retrieval of past simulation data from intervals corresponding to the time at which individual vehicles would have initiated a transmission. A demonstration of the model’s capability and the need to appropriately simulate wireless-based applications is provided in the form of a series of simulations evaluating the impacts of information delays on the behavior of a string of vehicles equipped with automated speed controllers and reacting to the sudden braking of the lead vehicle.
