WIMAX systems, adaptive antennas, antenna arrays
The performance an capacity of WIMAX (IEEE 802.16e) systems can be improved by using adaptive antennas in the base stations. These systems operate in Rayleigh/Rician fading channels in the 2-6 GHz band for mobile users with velocities up to 125 km/hr. In this paper, a closed form expression of the BER for coherent and noncoherent detection of PSK, FSK, and QAM signals using adaptive arrays in combined fading and correlated shadowing environments is provided. The conventional beamforming, Capon, Spectral MUSIC, and ESPRIT algorithms are used to compute the direction of arrival (DOA) of the signals for the OFDM uplink. The results obtained are used to determine the design parameters of the WIMAX base stations employing adaptive antennas.
