In this paper, we analyze the SIP-based mobility management behavior between IEEE 802.11-based wireless local area network (WLAN) and IEEE 802.16 based wireless metropolitan area network (WMAN). Our work focuses on signaling processes, during handoff between 802.11 and 802.16 networks. Particularly, the MAC layer technologies of 802.11 and 802.16 are examined in great detail. The SIP-based handoff procedure consists of the following sub-procedures: (1) Mobile Host (MH) initialization at MAC layer, (2) Acquisition of a new IP address using Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) in a newly connected network, (3) SIP terminal mobility management process, and the session re-establishment. Our analytical results and experimental results show the signaling delay and overhead of handoff between 802.11 and 802.16 networks.
