Abstract

In this research the Princeton Ocean Model (POM) is used to study the current circulations in the Gulf of Thailand (GoT), covering the domain 6◦ N to 14◦ N latitudes and 99◦ E to 105◦ E longitudes. The model has an orthogo nal curvilinear grid in the horizontal with variable spac ing from 2 km near the head of the GoT to 55 km at the eastern boundary, with 10 sigma levels in the vertical conforming to realistic bottom topography. The model run is executed using wind stress calculated from climatolog ical monthly mean wind, restoring-type surface heat and salt, and climatological monthly mean freshwater flux data. It is initialized by the temperature and salinity data from Levitus94 data set, with zero velocity. Force at the lateral boundary is prescribed from You’s results (IAP-model) and the radiation condition. The model domain has two open boundaries, i.e. eastern boundary and southern boundary. The northern boundary and western boundary are closed by land. The simulations show that the strong circulations are clockwise during summer and rainy seasons of Thailand, which are in the northeast and southwest monsoon peri ods respectively. They occur near Pattani and Narathiwat provinces during summer and in the central GoT during the rainy seasons.
