Abstract

Multi-phase (more than three phase) ac machines are nowadays widely considered as potentially viable solutions for numerous variable-speed drive applications. With an increased emphasis on renewable energy generation, where interfacing with the grid typically takes place by means of power electronic converters, or if generator are used for stand alone applications. The advantages of multi-phase machines that make them viable for drive applications can also be effectively exploited in generating applications. This paper, therefore, presents a simple d-q model of a six-phase synchronous generator for analysis of transient and dynamic behaviour of the machine. In the model, the effect of common mutual leakage inductance between the two three-phase winding sets, and mutual leakage coupling between d- and q- axis of stator winding have been considered. A detailed experimental investigation of the various performance characteristics of the six-phase synchronous generator in conjunction with a hydropower is also presented in this paper. Loading transients are recorded with the independent three-phase resistive load at each of the two three-phase winding sets, for various loads and /or configurations. Fluke 43-B Power Quality Analyzer was used for measurement and for recording various waveforms.
