Current density, induced EMF, harmonic spectra, torque ripple
In this paper, the electromagnetic performance of double-stator switched flux permanent magnet (DS-SFPM) machine (i.e., DS-SFPM 6/13), conventional single-stator switched flux permanent magnet (SFPM) machines having C-core and E-core stator configurations (i.e., C-core SFPM 6/13 and E-core SFPM 6/11), and partitioned-stator switched flux permanent magnet (PS-SFPM) machines having U-core, C-core and E-core stator structures (i.e., PS-SFPM 12/11, PS-SFPM 6/11 C-core and PS-SFPM 6/11 E-core, respectively) as well as double-stator topology is quantitatively compared. The compared machine parameters include: the open-circuit flux linkage and induced electromotive force (EMF) waveforms and spectra, total harmonic distortion (THD), torque-current, torque- current density, torque-copper loss, torque per magnet volume, torque density, torque ripple and cogging torque characteristics. It is worth noting that all the compared machines in this study belong to the family of flux-switching permanent magnet machines. The results reveal that although the PS-SFPM machine having 12PMs has the largest torque density amongst the other compared machines due to its high utilization of the inner space with permanent magnets (PMs); it suffers from poor ratio of torque to PM volume. This implies that it would be more expensive to produce such a machine when compared to the other analysed machines. Furthermore, the analysis also reveals that the DS-SFPM machine is characterized by high cogging torque and torque ripple compared to the other investigated machines, which may eventually lead to noise and vibration on the machine.
