Abstract

This paper presents the excitation ratio effect on the performance of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). The steady-state DFIG mathematical model and characteristics are presented. The effect of each factor (of the given excitation voltage ratio) on the generator performance characteristics is handled and discussed. Then, two techniques are proposed to validate the slip energy recovery system for wind energy generation. The first one deals with constant rotor flux operation to show its effect on the machine performance characteristics over the desired operating range. Thus, a second technique is proposed by modifying the rotor winding number of coils to extend the stable operating speed range up to the required range and improving the efficiency of the slip power recovery system.
