Internet resources are proliferating at an ever more rapid pace. Currently, Internet access is one method of quick information retrieval for abled persons using a conventional keyboard. However, a conventional keyboard is prohibitive to a person whose hand coordination and dexterity are impaired by such ailments as muscle atrophy, cerebral palsy, and other severe handicaps. To assist disabled participants in sharing the resources of the Internet, we have designed and implemented an easy-to-operate input interface. Morse code, with an easily operated two-switch input device, was selected as the adaptive communication tool. Experimental results show that a 14-year-old user with cerebral palsy could easily gain access to the Internet after 2 weeks’ practice on the proposed system.
