Abstract

Pedestrians are important to cities. However, pedestrians have traditionally received limited attention in travel behaviour research. One reason for this is the lack of simulation tools that can effectively describe and predict pedestrian traffic. In particular, there is a great need to model the fine-scale movement of urban pedestrian especially in the context of high-density urban living. This paper presents a multi-agent-based simulation system that models the fine-scale movement behaviour of pedestrians. A parametric test is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the system. The system is proved to be able to generate reasonable pedestrian flow compared with empirical data in the literature. The system has the potential to be applied in real-world cases and serves as a spatial decision support tool in pedestrian planning because of its support for geographical information system (GIS).
