Abstract

In this paper, the symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm, which is among the most recent meta-heuristic optimization techniques, is used to determine the optimal solution for the combined economic and emission dispatch (CEED) problem. In CEED, the target is to operate committed generators with lowest total operating cost and lowest total emission level, concurrently, while fulfilling total load demand and losses, and respecting generation limits and constraints. In this work, the CEED problem is stated as a multi-objective problem that considers both the operating costs and emission levels of generating units. The constrained non- linear optimization problem, which takes valve-point effects into consideration, is converted into a single-objective problem utilizing penalty factors in order to be solved using the SOS algorithm. The proposed algorithm will be applied to three different test systems whose results using other powerful algorithms have been reported in literature. To prove the usefulness of the proposed technique, results of the three test systems will be compared with those of other algorithms. Results confirm that the SOS is more competent than other algorithms and attains better near-global solutions under different scenarios.
