Abstract

As fatigue failure is the main failure mode for pressure-containing envelopes, fatigue pressure rating is important for reliability performance. So, the reverse thinking to validate rated fatigue pressure was developed by related standards, to greatly reduce test time and cost. However, if the verification is not successful, just one conclusion can be drawn that the component pressure-containing envelopes cannot sustain the proposed rated fatigue pressure without which no more knowledge can be derived. Therefore, the test data will be wasted for failed validation because much time and costs have been spent on the fatigue test in the industrial application. However, some more hidden information may be ignored, such as a reliable lower-rated fatigue pressure may be verified from the failed verification for the originally rated fatigue pressure. Therefore, to focus on estimating a re-rated fatigue pressure, a derating- based verification method is proposed for a failed verification test. The proposed method can take full advantage of the hard-won experimental data although it failed the validation for the originally rated fatigue pressure. Moreover, it can provide a clearer reference to subsequent validation studies. Finally, the proposed method was applied to re-verify rated fatigue pressure for the fatigue test of solenoid directional-control valves.
