This paper investigates a fingerprint matching method and a non-contact fingerprint input method for personal identification. In the proposed fingerprint matching method, the registered data extracted from a thinned binary fingerprint image with l-pixel line width is compared to the input fingerprint binary image. Since minutiae of fingerprints are not used, image reconstruction, which consumes much time, is unnecessary. Mechanisms to reduce the matching time for positioning are shown. The matching accuracy is discussed and optimal threshold values to decrease errors are shown. Additionally, the non-contact type input for fingerprint matching is discussed.
