irrigation canal, Saint Venant equations, modelling, auto matic control, PID controller
The paper considers the modelling and PID control of a real irrigation canal. The irrigation system studied is the Gignac canal, a three reaches system located in the south of France. A generic methodology for obtaining a frequency domain model of the first reach based on the linearized Saint Venant equations is proposed. Accurate linear models are obtained for different flow rates and analyzed using classical con trol tools in frequency domain. From a control point of view, a distant downstream PID controller is tested on one reach. PID parameters are tuned in order to meet gain and phase margins specifications and to obtain a good load dis turbance rejection.
