Abstract

Network scalability and node reconfigurability may lead to wavelength contention or blocking. In this paper, we examine the conditions for blocking and provide a critical analysis of the number of channel limitation per node in relationship to lightpath requests and available WDM channels. We develop a model and simulate various practical conditions with four popular routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) algorithms. Our results indicate that under certain conditions, the choice of RWA algorithm is significant in determining the wavelength blocking probability.
