Blind SNR estimation, fractal dimension
An in-service signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimation method for complex channels is reported. SNR values in noisy received signals are estimated from polynomial fits associated with correlative characteristics between SNR and variance fractal dimension (VFD) values. Simulated baseband 8-PSK signals over a complex additive white Gaussian noise channel are used to compare the performance of the proposed VFD-aided blind SNR estimator to that of a published decision-aided maximum likelihood (DA ML) SNR estimator. The proposed blind estimator is found to outperform DA ML estimator in the sense that it has smaller root-mean-square error and bias for an intermediate SNR range of interest.
